Working out in the winter does not mean you need to stay inside! If you’re anything like me, a lot of your fitness regime is centred around outdoor exercise. From trail running, to hill sprints, to park runs, there are so many outdoor workouts I love to do, but the winter weather does bring its challenges.
I’ve found having the right kit massively helps me continue my outdoor training in winter. By having the right workout gear, there’s no excuse not to get out and smash an outdoor workout!

Here are the winter essentials you need to help you stay prepared for outdoor exercise:
Trainers
If you’re anything like me then a lot of your running takes place off road, commonly known as trail running. The key here is trainers with a good grip. Make sure you invest in a good pair of off-road running shoes so that you don’t find the slippery or uneven surface causes you an injury.

Training Tights
They keep in the warmth whilst stopping chaffing. Certain pairs have great compression abilities which reduce post-workout muscle soreness too. As it gets darker outside, investing in a good pair with reflective material or reflective elements is important to keep you safe.

Technical Top and Training Jacket
Opting for a long sleeve technical top during the winter is highly recommended. These tops wick the sweat away from you and keep the in warmth; perfect as a base layer. A lightweight training jacket will also keep you warmer by keeping out the wind and chilly air, whilst not weighing you down.

Training Gloves
If I’m planning on using anything that requires grip, I generally opt for my bare hands, but if you’re on a winter run, a pair of training gloves never go a miss. They remove the sheer uncomfortable feeling of cripplingly cold hands.

Rat-Rag
I always find that covering your neck area keeps you warmer, but of course a chunky knitted scarf is not what you want when working out. Instead, a rat-rag is a scarf that is sweat-wicking and can be used in all manner of ways to keep your head, face and neck warm; A very handy piece of gear.
