In the hope of being better at all areas of athleticism this year, I am spending a lot of time varying my workouts and getting better in different areas. There are 4 areas I want to do more and work on in particular and here they are:
Running
It’s a given that training for a marathon, will ultimately make me a better runner. My marathon aim of 4:15 won’t happen without training pace, distance and being able to maintain a level and comfortable speed throughout a run. The furthest I have ever Run was during my very first Spartan Beast in Windsor and that was around 16 Miles. But there is a massive difference to climbing obstacles along the way and just running. By utilising the Adidas Runners and track sessions, this should give me the tools to get better!
Climbing
After trying bouldering with the Adidas Runners London team for the first time last year, I absolutely loved it. Now I want to train more reguarly at the climbing walls to increase my upper body strength and endurance. This can only help when it’s crunch time in an OCR event and I find myself hanging around. This will do massive things for my grip strength also which is key.
CrossFit
I’ve taking the leap away from just lifting heavy weights to getting involved in more and more CrossFit type excercises. I have found that the small amount I was doing last year improved all areas of my fitness. The idea of being an all around athlete interests me massively and fits in well to the goals I want to achieve from OCR this year.
Swimming
I have always been able to swim, just not very well. I am usually exhausted after 2 laps of a 25m pool (which always comes as a surprise when I know I can run for miles on end without stopping). The truth is that it is an entirely different type of fitness required and being an economical swimmer is the key to being able to smash out the laps One after the other. My hopes to one day complete a triathalon goes hand in hand with this goal.
What do you want get better at this year? Is there anything new you want to try? Do you have goals in mind? Let me know in the comments below and thanks for reading.
